Web Services and Other Data Sources

The ARMAP team is committed to making data about field-based scientific research (maintained in the ARLSS database) widely available in a variety of formats to address the needs of different user communities. In addition to the online mapping applications, updated information about the locations of field-based research, plus researcher names, project titles, key words and links to detailed reports may be obtained through the following public web services.

Web Service

A software system designed to support interoperable machine to machine interaction over a network or the Internet. In common usage the term refers to clients and servers that communicate using XML messages that follow the SOAP standard. Updated data from the ARLSS SQL database are available in XML format from the web service below. http://services.denver.veco.com/ARLSSData/Service1.asmx

Text file

Data from the web service are converted to text daily and are available at the following link: http://armap3d.utep.edu/ARMAPasTEXT/ArcticFieldResearchSites.txt

WMS

Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Services (WMS) produce maps of spatially referenced data dynamically from geographic information. ARMAP supplies a WMS to enable GIS users to embed an updated data layer into their own client applications. http://armap3d.utep.edu/arcgis04/services/Research_Sites/MapServer/WMSServer

How do I use WMS?

Here is an ArcGIS Example that includes step by step screen grabs for using the WMS.

KML

Keyhole Markup Language is an XML-based language for managing the display of three-dimensional geospatial data in the programs Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Mobile, ArcGIS Explorer and WorldWind. The word Keyhole is an earlier name for the software that became Google Earth; the software was produced in turn by Keyhole, Inc, which was acquired by Google in 2004.
